Mahmood Kooria is a leading scholar of Indian Ocean and maritime Islam, with a particular focus on the pre-modern and early modern periods. His research centres on Arabic and Malayalam textual traditions and the circulation of Shafi‘i legal thought across the Indian Ocean world. He completed his doctoral studies in global history at Leiden University in 2016, after earlier training in history and Islamic studies at the University of Calicut, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Leiden. Kooria is the author of Islamic Law in Circulation: Shafi‘i Texts Across the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean (2022) and several edited volumes on Indian Ocean history and Islamic law. He currently teaches at the University of Edinburgh and has previously held teaching positions at Ashoka University, Leiden University, the University of Bergen, and the National Islamic University, Jakarta.
